Life After Graduation for 2009 Captain Katie Flippen

After a summer at home in Norfolk, Va., I will begin working at the end of August for SNL Financial in Charlottesville, Va. I interned with them last summer and had a great experience. The company is a fun place to work and many of my co-workers are young 20-somethings, just out of college. SNL is considered a financial information and technology company. It provides market data and news specifically on four major industries, and a lot of people compare its major functions to Bloomberg, although they are somewhat different.

I will work for SNL as an analyst. My main priorities will be helping SNL's clients (mostly investment banks, corporate executives, asset managers, and government agencies) use the company's products. SNL's clients subscribe to SNL which means I will be working on collaborative projects involving SNL's products-- similar to customer relations management. I will also help to produce newsletters and provide data analysis. I think it will be a great way to learn about the financial industry and to gain valuable experience, without high-paced stress of Wall Street.

Also, I'm very excited to live in Charlottesville because it's a great city and there will be lots of graduate students to hang out with! And, I'll be closer to home in Norfolk, AND its only an hour from Lexington, so I can come back for a bunch of games!

Lacrosse Parents Dave & Terry Evans Reflect on their Daughters' Experience with W&L Lacrosse

We have greatly enjoyed the opportunity to have our daughters play lacrosse for W&L (Kelly '07 and Colleen '09). In reflecting on their involvement and the program in general, one word comes to mind: balance. Both of our daughters wanted to attend a top liberal arts college and continue to be a part of a nationally competitive lacrosse program. Kelly attended W&L directly, while Colleen played lacrosse for a Division I program and eventually transferred to W&L.

W&L has top notch facilities, a strong lacrosse tradition, and coaches that understand the type of student-athlete that is attracted to W&L. While all college sports require a time commitment, W&L affords the opportunity to play top-notch competition without having to miss many classes. Most conference games are relatively short bus rides and non-conference games, or longer trips, are typically played on the weekends. Additionally, because of the outstanding facilities and mild climate, W&L usually hosts several top teams from the north. The norm on the team continues to be of one of respect and collegiality among the players. The concern of team hazing or of upper class hierarchies, which can cause problems at some programs, are a non-issue at W&L. Furthermore, the parents foster an environment of support for all players and coaches. Parents enjoy the after game tailgates as much or more than the players, as parents develop a close relationship with other parents and players that continues beyond graduation.

Because the type of student-athlete that attends W&L wants a well-rounded college experience, they will be typically involved with other academic, volunteer, and social activities. Both of my daughters had the opportunity to study abroad. Some lacrosse programs frown on missing the "Fall Ball" season, joining a sorority (if they desire), or being involved in other campus groups. My daughters had the opportunity to work on the student newspaper as editor and assistant editor, be active in their sorority, and be involved with a variety of other activities on campus. Yet with all of these opportunities, the team is bound by a competitive desire to be a top ten lacrosse program. The expectations are high, but the girls relish the challenge. One aspect of W&L's lacrosse program that parents sometimes don't appreciate, is the fact the most games are covered over the internet and some are even webcast live. This allows parents, siblings, and friends that have work and other commitments to catch the action live and be part of the program from far away.

Both of my daughters have greatly enjoyed their academic and lacrosse careers at W&L. The time goes fast, but the lessons learned and friendships developed among players and parents last a lifetime. W&L has provided a unique opportunity for my daughters to achieve their academic and athletic goals. The dedicated faculty, W&L honor system, and speaking tradition translates into a college experience that can not be replicated and permeates the demeanor of the players and parents alike. We could not have been more pleased with our daughters' decision to attend W&L and to be part of a successful team legacy.

Meet First-year Defender Anna Pobletts

Name: Anna Pobletts
Class: 2012
Hometown: Sykesville, MD
High School: Century HS
Uniform: 21
Potential Major: Math, Economics
Favorite Food: My mom’s spaghetti
Favorite Color: Blue

What led you to attend and play lacrosse at W&L?
- I looked at a lot of schools similar to W&L in my college search. But when I came for my visit at W&L, I realized it had the perfect combination of great academics and a competitive lacrosse team that I was looking for.

So far, what’s been the best part of being a Generals lacrosse player?
- I have met so many awesome people on the team and really bonded with them. I love that the team is so close on and off the field. We always hang out before and after games and all the freshman go to DHall after practice everyday.

What has the best food been so far at the elaborate post-game tailgates?
- The fruit! I love the fresh berries we always have at the tailgate because we rarely have them in DHall.

Besides lacrosse, what it your favorite activity you have done on campus?
- I am a member of RUF, which is great because it’s another way to meet a ton of different people and have fun in a youth group-type environment.

What is your favorite book? Why?
- I’m a big fan of the Twilight series. I am obsessed and can read them over and over again.

What was the last movie you watched?
- I watched “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” in Stackhouse earlier this week because it was free and I didn’t have any homework to do. It was really good!

Do you have any exciting plans for the upcoming summer?
- Mostly just working at my internship at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab. I also go to Georgia to visit my family every year and to the beach with my friends!

Any other fun facts about yourself you’d like to share?
- The only thing I miss about being home is that with school and lax I don’t ever get to go skiing. It is my favorite thing about winter!

Meet First-year Midfielder Alexis Harrison

Name: Alexis Harrison
Class: 2012
Hometown: Rumson, NJ
High School: Rumson Fair Haven High School
Uniform: 25
Potential Major:
Economics and Spanish
Favorite Food: Pasta
Favorite Color: Orange

What led you to attend and play lacrosse at W&L?
-I received an email about the February high school clinic. I hadn’t heard of W&L before but I figured I would come down and check it out. The rest is history.

So far, what’s been the best part of being a Generals lacrosse player?
-The best part has been getting to know a group of girls that I probably would not have become so close with otherwise. The team is like a family, and I’m happy for the chance to be a part of it all.

What has the best food been so far at the elaborate post-game tailgates?
-My favorite foods so far have been the fresh fruit and the chocolate chip cookies that Bene and I devoured at the St. Mary’s tailgate and then afterwards in her room.

Besides lacrosse, what it your favorite activity you have done on campus?
-I had an amazing time on my pre-orientation trip. Despite that it rained the whole time and we were hiking what seemed like a billion miles uphill everyday, I met a few kids that I am still really close with and I had a lot of fun. It was definitely a good way to transition from living at home to being away at college.

What is your favorite book? Why?
-The Time Travelers Wife, because I like how the author spins the concept of time travel to be a genetic disorder instead of a gift. And I have a weakness for mushy love stories.

What was the last movie you watched?
-Valentin. I had to watch it for my Spanish class, and it turned out to be way better than I had expected. Both Maddie and I saw it for our Spanish classes, and we fell in love with the little boy who tells the story.

Do you have any exciting plans for the upcoming summer?
-I don’t think I’m doing anything too exciting this summer because I really want to be home with my family and friends. I will probably teach tennis lessons and go to the beach a lot.

Any other fun facts about yourself you’d like to share?
-I've been skiing since I was 4 years-old. I’m a Ravenclaw!!!
